Actions to Enhance Resilience Among Host and Refugee Communities

With BMZ support, WHH strengthened the resilience of South Sudanese refugees and host communities in Yumbe, Uganda. A multi-sectoral nutrition analysis in Bidibidi settlement identified contextual drivers of malnutrition and aligned project interventions with community needs, ensuring evidence-based actions to enhance health, food security, and long-term resilience.

Details

Between 2020 and 2023, WHH implemented a BMZ-funded cross-border project to improve resilience among South Sudanese refugee, host, and returnee communities in Yumbe district, Uganda. Central to this effort was a multi-sectoral Contextual Analysis of Nutrition (CAN), conducted in Bidibidi settlement and adjacent host communities in 2021. The assessment combined 24 focus group discussions, 10 key informant interviews, and secondary data review to explore the drivers of malnutrition and community vulnerabilities. Findings informed project design, ensuring that interventions were tailored to nutrition realities and community priorities, thereby strengthening food security, health, and resilience across refugee and host populations.
